Welcome Claudio Graziano

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon plans to name Italian Major General Claudio Graziano as new head of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) next month.
A letter from Ban to Russia's U.N. envoy Vitaly Churkin, who chairs the U.N. Security Council this month, said Graziano would succeed French General Alain Pellegrini, who is to relinquish his post on February 17.

Graziano, who served as Commander of the multinational Kabul brigade within the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan from July 2005 to February 2006, is currently serving with the Italian Joint Operation Headquarters as deputy chief of staff for operations, according to the U.N. letter released on Wednesday.

Last month, Pellegrini denied media reports of an early transfer of command to the Italian military.

Italy has the largest number of troops in UNIFIL with about 2,500, about one quarter of the force's total strength. France has contributed 1,650 soldiers.

UNIFIL, which was set up in 1978 to monitor the border between Israel and southern Lebanon, was considerably beefed up in the wake of last summer's war between Israel and Hizbullah.(AFP, Naharnet source)
